Nelson Mandela passed away yesterday.

What a legacy to leave behind that an entire world would mourn...

In our house today we stayed in from the frost and ice. Claire now insists on peeling her own oranges.

"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear."- Nelson Mandela

Rest in peace Nelson Mandela,

Nelson was a great speaker, and a charismatic revolutionist. I like his words, but I didn't experience enough to mourn his passing. I knew he planted bombs long time ago before his arrest. I knew that my Chinese friend who was born in SA and had a peaceful and normal childhood in SA before Nelson came to power, had to uproot everything he had and flee the country with his family after the government change and his family grocery store robbed and father and neighbors murdered. Did Nelson change SA to be a safer and more prosperous country? Or did he swap one apartheid for another that has higher crime and more murders and corruption? I will never know whether I will idolize Nelson or dislike him like my friend and his family because his change will not touch my life as it did on many white farmers, and the many white ppl who are now stucked in poverty together with the many more black ppl who are still in poverty. All I know is SA isn't a country that I will like to move to live in for now.

You are right that there is a lot more to think about than what meets the eye and South Africa does have an extremely high crime rate. I think the first step to equality is a good one though.
