awesome. can't wait to try some of these!
question...if you freeze one of those giant ziploc bags full of food...how then do you get it to fit into your crockpot without thawing it first?

That's a great point April. I actually have one of those 7 quart ovals vs. the old round ones. I find that the vegetables break apart easily and the only thing that doesn't "budge" is the meat. I use the bag itself to shove the vegetables down and it normally all fits (though awkwardly until it begins to thaw). Even if it is a small round crock pot I think if you don't mind touching frozen veggies and meat (and of course washing your hands right after) you could break it part with your hands.

Also, once you pour broth or the canned goods on it everything begins to break down/fall apart and melt almost immediately.

Another option is sitting it out the night before in the fridge... but that would require planning ahead. :)

How many servings do each of these make?

Pamella said...

I'm also curious about the number of servings. Also, are you calculating the rice or is the calories listed just for each serving? OR is that for the whole meal in itself?

The Reeds said...

Pamella and Lisa, I'm sorry it took me so long to respond! The calories is NOT including rice. Each of these make about 6-8 servings with the exception of Sesame Chicken(on this or my other crock pot post). It makes 4-6 and that is very very generous. I personally add extra broth and main veggies and we have more than enough for multiple meals and guests.

Hi-- For the Crock Pot Lentil Sweet Potato Soup, do you cook the lentils before putting them in the freezer?
Thank you!

The Reeds said...

Hi Sybil! No I don't. I just throw it all in the bag and then the crock pot. :) I hope it works well for you.

Great recipes!!! I'm making these for post baby meals! How many oz or cups of liquid in that Santa Fe recipe for the chicken broth?

The Reeds said...

Hi Shereen! Congratulations on the baby! These would be great for post baby. I made TWENTY casseroles this time for post baby (because I'm a lunatic!) and I will share them soon.

As for the Santa Fe- I pour in 32 oz. of broth. I have an oval crock pot and found that if I don't put a lot of liquid it dries out/burns.

Happy cooking!

Site is not working.

To the Reeds: Has anyone else informed you that the "oatmeal smiles" site you refer to multiple times isn't working and hasn't for quite some time? I would love to read your other material but it still isn't working. It appears that it wasn't in April either... according to the last post.
